The Scary Truth About Waxing

Haunted houses should be the only thing making you scream this Halloween, not your monthly waxing appointment. While the pain of waxing is something most men and women have come to terms with, take a minute to learn about some of the ways waxing may be harming your body before scheduling your next appointment.

Burns. Nearly every woman who has tried a ‘home wax kit’ has a horror story. The most common problem? Burning yourself. Keeping the wax just a degree or two too hot can burn your skin off, leaving it red and inflamed.

Irritation. Remember the first time you had your eyebrows waxed? You expected to look in the mirror and see Brooke Shields, but instead you just saw red, blotchy skin that had swelled to twice its normal size. Even though the redness usually goes away within 24 hours, waxing can still leave your skin dry, sensitive to the touch and itchy - especially when done on more sensitive areas, like bikini line and underarms.

Infection. Tearing out hair from its follicle is not only painful, but leaves behind hundreds of small open wounds. With all those open wounds, it’s no surprise that you’re more susceptible to infection after getting waxed. “Pulling the hairs out of those areas increases the risk that tiny skin tears will get bacteria in them that was never meant to be inside the skin. It can cause surface infections and even deeper cellulitis in some cases,” said Dr. Jessica Krant, M.D., an Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology.

Scarring. Years of waxing (especially if not done properly) can leave skin permanently irritated, wrinkled or scarred.

Ingrown hairs. Anytime you pull a hair out by the root, a new one takes its place a few weeks later. New thin and weak hairs can get stuck under your skin if it can’t make it to the surface - leaving you with an ingrown hair. Not only are they irritating and unsightly, but can become infected if not treated or removed.
