As the days get shorter and your skin gets a little drier, it’s time to switch up your skincare routine, prep your complexion for cool weather, and repair sun damage. From sunscreen to soap, here are a few tips we recommend: 

Switch up your sunscreen

Summer heat and humidity can be heavy on the skin, so you’re forced to give your complexion a break by lightening up on your sunscreen by switching to a gel or liquid formula. This fall, you don't have to worry about looking or feeling too greasy if you choose a creamier one.

Layer up your moisturizer

The same goes for your moisturizer. When the temperatures outside are hot and humid, you have to choose a lightweight product. But in the fall, your skin will start to dry up, leading you to need a slightly heavier moisturizer than you did last month.

Ditch the soap

Soap can make your skin dry out easily, so choose a hydrating cleanser or creamy body wash that will leave your skin feeling silky smooth all through the fall and winter months.

Every summer, we hear the same lecture about SPF. But sunscreen isn’t the only way to keep your skin safe this season! From June through September, you skin will undergo many changes, so it’s important to plan your skincare regimen accordingly. Here are a few tips we recommend:

1. Change Up Your Diet
Did you know that eating the right foods can make it more difficult for your skin to burn? That’s right! Knowing what foods will positively impact your skin can help you protect you. Try flaxseed oil, salmon, and walnuts - all packed with plenty of nutrients. And don’t forget fruit and vegetables to keep yourself hydrated.

2. Keep Your Pores Clear
Hot and humid temperatures can bring about acne and clogged pores, especially if you’re using your heavy moisturizer from the winter. Switch things up by choosing a lightweight oil-free moisturizer starting now and through September. It’s also important to exfoliate your skin twice a week to clear out your pores from any winter skin layers.

3. Reverse Signs of Aging
Most of us know that sun damage can speed up the aging process. But did you know it’s possible to reverse the damage? Treating prior skin damage involves topical medications that “lighten hyper-pigmentation and treat precancerous cells”. So choose products that contain glycolic acid to help minimize signs of aging and decrease your chances of squamous-cell cancers.

Tomorrow marks the start of Independence Day weekend! If you’re planning on taking a drive down to the beach, make sure you practice safe sun. In other words, avoid making these four common sunscreen mistakes:  

Mistake #1: Choosing sunscreen with toxic ingredients

Sunscreen can help protect your skin from UV damage, but some won’t protect you from harmful ingredients, like methylisothiazolinone (MI). MI is a potent allergen that has been linked to painful rashes Other harmful ingredients include Retinyl palmitate and vitamin A, which believe it or not can actually cause damage to the skin once exposed to the sun. 

Mistake #2: Not applying enough

We’re not talking not reapplying, but rather not applying a thick coat. Product testers recommend using a thick coat to the skin to determine its SPF. That being said, don’t be afraid to slather it on! For adults, dermatologists suggest one ounce to cover exposed skin.  

Mistake #3: Going for SPF 50+

Contrary to popular belief, choosing an SPF over 50 offers a poor balance between UVA and UVB protection. Many also believe that the higher the SPF, the less they need to reapply - this is untrue. So don’t be mislead by the number. Instead, stick to an SPF no higher than 50 and reapply at least every two hours.

Mistake #4: Using expired sunscreen

Sunscreens age just like anything else. And when you expose it to polar temperatures (bringing it to the beach and then store in a cool place at home), the formulation can separate in its bottle. As a result, the sunscreen won’t cover your skin in the thick way it’s made to do. You’ll be safer by shaking sunscreens before applying and discarding products after their expiration date.
