It may be the end of summer this week but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of grooming hair down there for all the ladies out there. While some women opt for waxing the area, shaving is still the most popular form of grooming, according to a study published in JAMA Dermatology. Unfortunately, one thing that always goes hand in hand while shaving your pubic hair are bumps, redness, and irritation.

Want to learn the right way to shave in order to avoid these pesky side effects? Follow these steps:

Dont Skip Pre-Shave Prep

Has it been awhile since your last shave (no judgement here!)? Start by trimming your hair first before taking a razor to it. Next, soak the bikini area with warm water for 10 minutes to help prevent razor burn..this will soften your skin which makes it easier to remove hair. Lastly, exfoliate and moisturize your skin. Exfoliating once a week will help remove dead skin and extend the life of your razor blades.

Buy The Right Razor

You should invest in two different razors - one for your bikini area and one for your legs and underarms. The bikini area is sensitive which means it needs a razor that is less harsh on the skin - two to three blades max.

Shave Smart

DO NOT shave against the direction of hair growth. By shaving in the direction that your hair grows you prevent razor burn as well as ingrown hairs. Your blade should feel smooth over your hair, if you feel a lot of pressure and resistance, you’re pressing too hard.

Post-Shave Rinse And Moisturize

Hold a cold compress to the area for about 10 minutes to prevent irritation. The last step is to apply moisturizer. Try to stay away from heavy creams with perfume and alcohol ingredients. Try a moisturizer with aloe vera or lavender oil to help sooth the area.

Looking for a way to get rid of your pubic hair for good? Instead of shaving and waxing try laser hair removal. Pinterest is full of random hacks from cooking to shopping and even shaving! We love coming across little tips that can help us ladies avoid the pain of shaving. Here are our top favorites:

Getting a perfect underarm shave:
First you need to invest in a good razor, finding one that is soft yet efficient. Make sure you have a gentle touch as to not irritate the skin. Prepare by shaving when you are under the shower or right after you finish it to avoid injury. Move your razor in a c-shaped motion or angle as opposed to up and down (since the skin grows in many directions there). On top of that, you will need a great lotion - one that can remove the unpleasant irritation and leave your skin feeling silky smooth.

Making bikini line shaving less miserable:
BuzzFeed recommends trimming your hair down there before shaving. Keep the hair just a few centimeters long., Once you’re ready to shave, relax in the shower about 5 to 10 minutes beforehand to open up the pores. Lastly, get into the habit of exfoliating your skin before you start shaving. “This primes the area so you can remove the hair more easily.”

Shaving your legs properly:
When it comes to shaving your legs, don’t skimp on the cream. It’s incredibly important to hydrate your hairs with a sensitive shaving cream formula before you just go at it. You can also apply baby oil before the shaving cream to prevent razor burn in the shower.

If you’re tired of the daily shave, you might want to consider switching to an alternative solution - laser hair removal. Most of us women can agree: achieving a smooth shave isn’t easy. In fact, sometimes it feels impossible - especially when you’re rushing out in the morning. But with a few quick tips, you might be able to change some of your shaving habits:

Skip the single blade
Many women are guilty more often than not of using single blade disposable razors. Single blades are not made to reach all hair in every angle, especially under the knee and around the ankles. For a good, close shave, you’ll need to invest in a 4 to 5 blade razor whose blade head you can change time and time again when it becomes dull.

Shaving first thing
Another common mistake is waking up and immediately reaching for your razor. The truth is, when we sleep at night, our legs swell, causing the hair to retreat back into their follicles. Therefore, shaving right after you wake up only makes for an incomplete shave in which you’ll find yourself having to shave again later in the day. So instead, shave either right before bed or wait a good twenty to thirty minutes before attacking your stubble.

Grooming with dry legs
Shaving dry is a big no-no for us, gals! Not everyone has time in the morning to wait to shave, but trust us - if you give yourself a few extra minutes to lather up with a conditioning shaving cream, the results will be night and day.

When all’s said and done, shaving is undoubtedly a hassle - but laser hair removal isn’t! If you’re ready to bite the bullet and start your laser hair removal treatments to banish hair for good, give us a call at 1 (516) 307-1543 to schedule your free consultation.

Cuts and burns are common - especially when shaving your underarms. That oh-so-sensitive area we so desperately want to smoothen out is tricky. If you’re struggling to achieve a close shave, here are a few tips we suggest:

Schedule a shaving routine
Knowing when the shave is just as important as using the right type of razor. You can use the best razor on the market, but if you shave right before hitting the beach or going for a swim, you could be setting yourself up for some major razor burn and chafing. Try shaving the night before (or at least a few hours before) to allow your skin time to repair.

Skip the soap
Don’t underestimate the sensitivity of your underarm skin. You might be able to get away with using soap on your legs, but lathering up on your underarms just won’t cut it. You’ll be better off swapping out your soap bar for a body wash or shaving cream packed with vitamin E or shea butter. This will help your razor to glide gently along your skin.

Know the right directions
It’s not always clear which direction the hair under your arms grows from. That’s because it grows in all different directions. So to get a close shave, avoid going over the same area in the same direction more than once. Instead, shave in every direction (up, down, right, and left). Work against the grain for a great shave.

Shaving your underarms becoming too much trouble? Laser hair removal is a simpler solution for hair removal and is well worth it if you find yourself struggling to achieve a close shave. Give us a call at 1 (516) 307-1543 to schedule your free consultation.
