Winter is not a girl’s best friend, which is why giving your skin a little extra TLC is essential. Here are 10 tips we recommend to help you get a radiant winter’s glow:

1. Wash with lukewarm water as this will avoid the stripping of your natural oils.
2. Moisturize immediately after bathing. It needs this especially after washing up.
3. Choose the right moisturizer - one that is nourishing and doesn’t have petroleum based ingredients (which can further dry your skin in winter).
4. Install a humidifier in your home to put even more moisture back into your skin while you’re sleeping.
5. Drink more water instead of hot cocoa because your skin needs extra hydration from the inside, out.
6. Exfoliate to eliminate dead cells, especially on our hands. Find an exfoliating mask you can use on both your hands and face and moisturize immediately afterwards.
7. Switch up your cleanser for a more hydrating version that contains moisturizing ingredients.
8. Eat foods high in water. Winter makes us want to turn to comfort foods, but opting for apples, oranges, tomatoes, and zucchini can support the healthy production of collagen and elastin.
9. Avoid toxins and irritants such as wool and chemical-laden detergents, which can bother sensitive skin.
10. Try making a DIY hydrating mask using ingredients such as avocado, honey, yogurt, olive, and jojoba oil.

Don’t forget to pamper yourself with one of Tropicalaser’s organic hydrating facials! All signs of roughness and  winter dryness will be smoothed away to leave a polished and glowing complexion. We service Garden City, Great Neck, and surrounding areas. Give us a call at (516) 307-1543 to schedule your FREE consultation with an experienced Tropicalaser practitioner.

As the days get shorter and your skin gets a little drier, it’s time to switch up your skincare routine, prep your complexion for cool weather, and repair sun damage. From sunscreen to soap, here are a few tips we recommend:

Switch up your sunscreen

Summer heat and humidity can be heavy on the skin, so you’re forced to give your complexion a break by lightening up on your sunscreen by switching to a gel or liquid formula. This fall, you don't have to worry about looking or feeling too greasy if you choose a creamier one.

Layer up your moisturizer

The same goes for your moisturizer. When the temperatures outside are hot and humid, you have to choose a lightweight product. But in the fall, your skin will start to dry up, leading you to need a slightly heavier moisturizer than you did last month.

Ditch the soap

Soap can make your skin dry out easily, so choose a hydrating cleanser or creamy body wash that will leave your skin feeling silky smooth all through the fall and winter months.

Get a facial

Just because summer is almost over, doesn’t mean you should forget about exfoliating and clarifying. In fact, you should be doing it more as the weather dries up! At Tropicalaser, we offer a wide variety of facials such as our Pear & Poppy Seed Polishing Facial, designed to return clarify and luminosity to the skin as dead cells are exfoliated. In the end, all signs of roughness and dryness will be smoothed away to leave a polished and glowing complexion.

We service Garden City, Great Neck, and surrounding areas. Give us a call at (516) 307-1543 to schedule your FREE consultation with an experienced Tropicalaser practitioner.

Every summer, we hear the same lecture about SPF. But sunscreen isn’t the only way to keep your skin safe this season! From June through September, you skin will undergo many changes, so it’s important to plan your skincare regimen accordingly. Here are a few tips we recommend:

1. Change Up Your Diet
Did you know that eating the right foods can make it more difficult for your skin to burn? That’s right! Knowing what foods will positively impact your skin can help you protect you. Try flaxseed oil, salmon, and walnuts - all packed with plenty of nutrients. And don’t forget fruit and vegetables to keep yourself hydrated.

2. Keep Your Pores Clear
Hot and humid temperatures can bring about acne and clogged pores, especially if you’re using your heavy moisturizer from the winter. Switch things up by choosing a lightweight oil-free moisturizer starting now and through September. It’s also important to exfoliate your skin twice a week to clear out your pores from any winter skin layers.

3. Reverse Signs of Aging
Most of us know that sun damage can speed up the aging process. But did you know it’s possible to reverse the damage? Treating prior skin damage involves topical medications that “lighten hyper-pigmentation and treat precancerous cells”. So choose products that contain glycolic acid to help minimize signs of aging and decrease your chances of squamous-cell cancers.

Make a promise to yourself this summer to protect your skin in all the ways you can. And don’t forget to pamper yourself with facial treatments from Tropicalaser of Long Island! A facial cleans, exfoliates and nourishes the skin, promoting a clear, well-hydrated complexion, and can help your skin look younger.

There’s a lot of talk about which sunscreens to wear, which to avoid, and how often to apply them. As your Long Island laser clinic, skin care is of the utmost important to us, which is why we searched high and low to set the record straight and tell you what you need to know about protecting your skin:

Q: Is 100+ sunscreen really all that better than SPF 30?
A: To answer this question we must first know what SPF means. SPF refers to the “ability of a sunscreen to block UVB rays, which cause sunburns, but not UVA rays, which are more closely linked to deeper skin damage.”

While it’s logical to think that SPF 30 is greater than SPF 15, that’s not exactly how it works. SPF 15 blocks out about 94 percent of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks out 97 percent, and SPF 45 blocks out around 98 percent. After that, it becomes more of a marketing gimmick. Although higher SPF can better protect your skin against the harmful effects, the reality of these numbers only goes so far.

That being said, the best way to make sure you are thoroughly protected is to reapply often. In other words, don’t just think you can slab some on in the morning and be done with it. Protecting your skin means being consistent and educated about how sunscreen works.

Will you think twice about applying sunscreen this summer? We know we will!

Make a pact this year to protect your skin by reapplying at least once per hour. And don’t forget to pamper yourself with facial treatments from Tropicalaser of Long Island! A facial cleans, exfoliates and nourishes the skin, promoting a clear, well-hydrated complexion, and can help your skin look younger.

Leaving for Spring Break soon? The warm sun on your skin can feel therapeutic but can more so be extremely damaging to your skin. In fact, the more sun you’re exposed to, the faster your skin is likely to age. Here’s how:

Sun and elastin
Overtime, the sun’s UV light damages the elastin in your skin. The breakdown of these fibers essentially causes the skin to stretch, sag, and lose the ability to snap back, leading to what we know to be wrinkles.

Protecting your skin
Although it’s best to start protecting your skin when you’re young, it’s never too late to take precautions. Below are a few actions to take before basking in the sun:
Wear SPF and reapply - An obvious solution is to apply SPF 30 or more every hour, especially between 10am and 2pm when the sun is at its strongest.
Hydrate - Drink less alcohol and more water - it hydrates the skin. Once the skin is damaged by the sun, one thing that can help is to feed your body with the proper amount of H2O.
Moisturize daily - Apply a moisturizer every day to give your skin a more youthful appearance (and hydrate).
Eat a balanced diet - One of the smartest things you can do to counteract sun damage is to incorporate healthy foods into your diet. Vegetables and fresh fruits can help prevent premature skin aging, even if you’ve been exposed to more sun than you intended to.

Make a pact this year to protect your skin in these little ways. And don’t forget to pamper yourself with facial treatments from Tropicalaser of Long Island! A facial cleans, exfoliates and nourishes the skin, promoting a clear, well-hydrated complexion, and can help your skin look younger.

While the spring season is on the horizon, we’re not out of the woods just yet. This winter’s weather continues to wreak havoc on our skin - leaving us rough, scaly, and itchy.

Whether you are suffering from red, raw skin right now or are finding your legs more flaky than usual - there are things you can do to make a difference:

  • Keep cool. While cold temps may still be upon us, refrain from cranking the thermostat! Dry, indoor heat will rid your home - and skin - of its natural moisture. Instead, layer up while indoors and consider investing in a humidifier at the very least for your bedroom. Your skin will thank you!
  • Bathe in WARM water. A nice, hot, steamy shower may be just what you need to unwind after a long day - but it doesn’t help your dry skin. Hot water strips your body of its natural protective oils which work to keep your skin smooth and moist. Dial down the temperature to just above lukewarm.
  • Shave wisely. Not only can shaving irritate dry skin, but the act of shaving scrapes off your skin’s natural oils. Wait until you’re near done with your shower to shave - hairs will be softer and more pliable post bathing. Always be sure to use shaving cream or gel and a sharp blade.
  • Pat yourself dry. After a shower, start patting (not rubbing) yourself dry. Rubbing can irritate your skin and also whisks away a lot of beneficial moisture. Patting on the other hand leaves your skin damp - key for soaking up any moisturizer you apply after showering!

Craving your favorite comfort foods this winter? Aside from creamy soups and pasta dishes, there are many other alternatives that will not only comfort you but will also rejuvenate your skin and slow the aging process:

Nuts
Rich with unsaturated fats, there are a variety of nuts that can reduce the appearance of aging skin. This is due to the amount of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that it offers. So grab a handful of almonds and cashews on-the-go or add some to your favorite salad.

Sweet Potatoes
Swap out that baked potato for an even sweeter alternative. Sweet potatoes contain beta-carotene, which not only gives them their orange color but also offers aging benefits. For example, it prevents the breakdown of collagen in your skin and also protects you from sun damage (note: this is not an alternative for sunscreen).

Chocolate
No more excuses needed! Contrary to popular belief, indulging in a bar of chocolate every now and again will not cause breakouts. In fact, the flavonoids found in dark chocolate can help protect your skin from sun damage.

Blueberries
One of the healthiest fruits that fights signs of aging. Packed with antioxidants, blueberries can fight inflammation that leads to unhealthy skin. Throw a handful into your morning bowl of oatmeal, yogurt, or smoothie for the most delicious and beneficial results!

Feeling cursed with facial redness this winter? When the weather becomes dry as it is, it’s only natural that your skin will turn dry and flushed. In fact, many of us suffer from dry skin and redness during the cooler months. But luckily, there are a few simple remedies that can neutralize the skin’s pigmentation:

Masks - Although there’s no scientific evidence to prove facial masks are beneficial for the skin, it’s been a well-known remedy for hundreds of years. Those containing ingredients, such as cucumber and oatmeal have been a popular cure for redness. For cucumber, be sure to use it straight from the fridge, and for oatmeal, try pulverized oats.

Diet - Tea such as chamomile and green tea contain skin cell rejuvenating properties, so be sure to add a few cups into your diet. It also helps to shy away from spicy foods and drinks that are especially hot. Substitute these with fish oil supplements and probiotics. And don’t forget to eat plenty of natural foods, like fruits and vegetables that contain vitamin E.

Facials - Facials have been proven to improve skin tone and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Whether it be cranberry pomegranate or chocolate mousse, there are plenty of facial treatments that can hydrate your skin and return your pigmentation to normalcy.

If you find that home remedies aren’t curing your facial redness, turn to Tropicalaser of Long Island to give your skin a nourishing and cleansing boost. A facial cleans, exfoliates and nourishes the skin, promoting a clear, well-hydrated complexion, and can help your skin look younger.

Oily skin not only makes your face shiny and greasy looking, it can also increase your risk of acne and clogged pores. But just like with any other skin types, there are some things you can do to reduce skin problems.

Stylecraze has helped us round up some ways to keep your skin's oil production in control:

  • Say YES to cleansing. By keeping your skin clean helps prevent dirt buildup. Opt for gel-based or foaming cleansers if you have oily skin as well as those that are oil free.
  • Scrubbing is GOOD! By exfoliating once or twice a week, you can reduce the amount of dead skin cells and renew your skin’s surface.
  • WEEKLY face masks are effective. Adding a weekly face mask to your skin routine can help absorb all the excess oils.
  • Use ALCOHOL-FREE toner. Toning daily will help both eliminate excess oil and get rid of dirt on your skin.
  • DO NOT skip moisturizer. Oily skin needs hydration and moisturizing, and by stripping that will only encourage the production of oil. Look for water-based/oil-free moisturizers.
  • ALWAYS wear sunscreen. Gel-based sunscreen will leave your face matte and help fight the good fight against brown spots, pigmentation, and freckles.

Throughout the day, you may always want to keep some translucent powder handy to control oil. Oil blotting sheets are also a good backup!

Feel like the above tips aren’t helping? Ask us about our skin care services to see which is best for you. Feeling a bit less than luminous lately? Truth be told, of the multitude of ways to make your skin look younger and fresher - many don’t take much more effort in your already daily routine.

Check out some of these simple skin tips you may not have heard:

Cheap-o lotions work: If you’re in a pinch, any moisturizer with glycerin, shea butter, or another basic hydrator will help your skin. For more frequent use, you’ll still want to go with dermatologist recommended creams that have ingredients designed to boost cell turnover, stimulate collagen grown, and banish DNA-damaging free radicals.

Remember, the sun is everywhere: Just because you are barely exposed to direct sunlight on your daily commutes doesn’t mean you are protected against photodamage. UVA rays can go through the windows of your office, home, and car! Recent studies have shown the damage that UVA can do to the skin on a daily basis. So don’t risk it, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen each and every day.

Keep your distance: The sun isn’t the only source of heat damaging to skin. Direct exposure to space heaters and fireplaces (two - three feet) can cause redness and breakdown of collagen. Bundle up and sit at least ten feet away from heat sources!

Drink water, wisely: Water of course is important for your health, and skin. But constantly pursing creates lines and agitates any existing ones around the mouth. Choose to sip water from a glass when you can or opt for a reusable bottle with a spout that you can easily squirt into your mouth.

It’s not too late to take care of your skin. Plus, with facials and microdermabrasion treatments offered here at Tropicalaser Long Island, you can help regenerate the fibers that make skin look youthful. For smoother, firmer and more even toned skin, contact us to learn about such services.

Facials are not only for when you decide to pamper yourself. While regularly cleaning your face is important - facials help in giving you a deeper clean, which is necessary for the health and wellness of your skin!

And we’re not talking about an at-home solution. Here’s why you should be getting professional facials regularly:

  1. Expert skin analysis is key in understanding your skin’s specific needs. As everyone’s needs are different, an esthetician can help in suggesting the best products for your home care routine as well as identify what is needed to treat any problems you may have.
  2. Professional strength exfoliation is important, especially with the unavoidable toxins that can cause our skin to look congested. Having it specifically catered to your skin type (decided on after your expert skin analysis), helps to better smooth your skin, increase cellular turnover, and break up skin discoloration.
  3. Deep Cleansing removes dirt and oil build up without drying out skin. It takes a professional esthetician to properly prepare and soften the skin before manual extractions can take place in an effective way. Proper cleansing means your pores will be refined and your complexion will look and feel rejuvenated.
  4. Anti-aging is an inevitable part of life, but getting regular facials can promote cell turnover and boost collagen production. Certain facials even utilize specific antioxidants and vitamins for anti-aging benefits! Ask us about our Firm Skin Acai Facial, its potent formula will leave behind a youthful complexion while firming and plumping the skin.
  5. Alleviating stress is necessary for your overall wellbeing. As studies have shown, stress can lead to unhealthy skin - so what better way to de-stress than by receiving a facial with a face, neck, and back massage in a peaceful relaxing environment! Restore balance to your mind AND complexion.

For more information on why facials are good for you check out the full article on Refinery29

If you’re looking to schedule a facial on Long Island - give us a call today! Choose from our Pear & Poppy Seed Polishing Facial, Cranberry Pomegranate Facial, Chocolate Mousse Hydration Facial, or the Firm Skin Acai Facial.

It’s time for a skin-tervention. You may not always be aware of it, but every day habits can easily have a negative impact on your skin. If you’re guilty of one of the below, time to make some adjustments - fast!

Popping pimples- It’s not uncommon to want to pop pimples but do keep in mind, squeezing them can actually make the infection go deeper! This major backfire can permanently enlarge pores. Can’t resist? Try washing your face with a washcloth - if the pimple is ready to pop, this pressure is all it needs to drain it.

Sleeping with makeup on- Not removing makeup before bed can clog pores and oil glands, resulting in acne. It can also cause premature aging as leaving your makeup on doesn’t let your skin recover from the damage it encountered during the day.

Not getting enough sleep- Sleep not only benefits our energy levels and metabolism but it also has serious effects on our skin. Sleep helps the body’s hydration rebalance. Beyond those dark, under-eye circles, lack of sleep can also cause skin dryness and visible wrinkles.

Washing your face with the wrong cleansers- Washing your face daily is important - as long as you’re using the correct soap. Those prone to pimples or that have oily skin initially may gravitate to cleansers or exfoliators that dry things out. Makes sense right? Wrong! These actually can strip the skin of all its GOOD oils and protective barrier. Instead go with a nourishing face wash.

Feel like the above daily habits have added years to your face? Treatments such as facials and microdermabrasion help regenerate the fibers that make skin look youthful. For smoother, firmer and more even toned skin, contact us to learn about such services.

Call today for a free consultation at 516.307.1543 or visit our website for more information. We offer treatments to patients on Long Island at our Garden City location, 825 East Gate Blvd., Suite #104.
